Cover Letters — The Real First Impression

Nobody would go to a job interview in a stained shirt, or with food in one's teeth, or without a proper introduction. Cover letters are the interview before the interview, and can spell the difference between a job interview for you and the round file for your resume.

Cover letters are read by employers and human resources managers for two main reasons: to exclude applicants from further consideration, and to determine the seriousness of the application. Cover letters should:
      • be addressed to a specific individual. If the individual is unknown, it should be addressed to a gender-neutral party, explain, immediately, what job opening the applicant is applying for.
      • briefly note the experience and skills the applicant possesses that makes him or her suited for the job.
      • describe the personal characteristics the applicant possesses that makes him or her suited for the job.
      •  be properly formatted as a business letter, contain the applicant's contact information, and be free of typographical and grammatical errors.
